About the Breed
Karakachan (Ka-Rak-a-chan) dogs are great livestock guardian dogs that are effective at flock protection, without being aggressive towards people. The breed originated in Bulgaria and were first imported into the United States in 2004. While the breed is not recognized by the AKC/CKC the breed has its own registry, the AKDA (American Karakachan Dog Association). The typical size of the breed is 88-120 pounds and 25-30 height for males, and 66-99 pounds and 24-27 inches tall for females. They typically do not roam far off their farm and bond closely with their humans.
The Karakachan Dogs of Pop a Top Farm
After much research on the different breeds of livestock guardian dogs for our farm, we decided on the Karakachan breed. We obtained a male and female from two different reputable breeders, both members of the AKDA, to begin our breeding program here at the farm. Both came from working farms and training started early from their parents to do their job. When we introduced the pups to our goats, they jumped right in and proved that they were fully capable of guarding their own herd. They are intelligent, eager to please, and very loving.
Karakachan dogs at Pop a Top Farm are all registered with the AKDA and pups have been exposed to our livestock at an early age to begin their training from our adult dogs.
Puppies will have their initial vaccinations and wormed prior to going to their new homes. Typically, pups are ready to leave the farm at around 8-10 weeks depending on the liter's weening progress. A $300 non-refundable cash deposit will hold the puppy of your choosing until pick up. You will be able to make an appointment to visit the farm to pick out your puppy and pay your deposit after they turn 3 weeks of age. The balance due must be paid in cash at the time of pickup. Pups are $750 for males and $850 for females.
We have done everything possible to produce healthy pups at our farm and are confident that the pup that you receive is healthy. The buyer is responsible for having the pup examined by a veterinarian within 72 hours of taking possession. Our Pup health guarantee is included with the contract and contains all requirements necessary should a veterinarian deem the pup you receive is unhealthy due to a genetic issue or by fault of the breeder.

Trooper is our first Male Karakachan on the farm. We traveled to Tennessee to get him and he is a great start for our breeding program. He is the primary overseer of the herd. Most days you will see him watching the property and patrolling the farm. He loves belly rubs and kisses.

Ginger is our first Female Karakachan added to our breeding program and came to us from a breeder from East Metro Atlanta area. She is our herder of the two dogs and keeps the goats where they are supposed to be. Ginger is a sweet affectionate girl that is always on the move and loves kisses.

This guy has the most coloring. Cream colored coat with several black patches, some black undercoating and black over his eyes.

Like his two of his brothers, he has black patches over his eyes and both ears. He has a cream colored coat and one black spot on his back.

The third of the Black / Cream boys has more black on his head and two black spots on his back. He also has a half mustache that is super cute.

This fella is all cream with no other coloring on him. The only difference between him and his other solid cream brother is a little pink on his nose.

Our one and only girl... This cutie does not miss a feeding. She continues to weigh in as the larges pup. she has the cutest pink and black spotted nose. She also has the black patches over her eyes and ears, which is the only black markings on her.
